Positive Parenting For Raising Teens

Being a parent can be difficult, but being a parent to a teenager has to be one of the biggest challenges we face when we have kids.

Even though teenagers aren’t yet quite ready for the adult world, they will still want to experience a lot of independence and responsibilities, some of which they might not be quite ready for. So, it’s important that, as their parent, you are always there for them and can guide them in the right direction so that they end up growing up into responsible adults. Here are some positive parenting ideas for raising teens that can help you do just that.

Be A Friend As Well As A Parent

Firstly, it’s important that you aren’t too strict with your teen. In fact, it’s a good idea to try to be a friend as well as a parent. If you are too strict and bring in too many rules, you may find that your teenager has a tendency to rebel and will purposefully go against everything that you say. So, always be friendly with them, even when you need to discuss something important with them, and you should find that this leads to positive results!

Open Up Communication

You also need to make sure that you have good communication with your teen so that they always feel like they can open up to you and discuss a variety of topics with you. The best way to promote good communication is to set a good example. So, you might want to chat to your teen about any issues that you are facing in life. They might then do the same and discuss any problems that you might be able to help them with.

Give Them A Little Leeway

Teens will want a taste of independence as much as they can, so it’s important that you give them some leeway in their life to do what they want. However, there might be times you need to tighten the reins and hold them back from doing certain things. For instance, if you think that they might be falling in with the bad crowd, you might want to stop them from seeing certain friends. Otherwise, you might end up hiring a criminal defence attorney if your teen ends up in a very bad situation! So, give them some leeway but be careful to set some very firm rules and boundaries as well.

Be A Parenting Team

Don’t forget that you aren’t alone when it comes to parenting. You and your partner should work together as a team when it comes to parenting and raising your teenager. Make sure you discuss all aspects of this together and set the rules as a couple as well. Any disagreements with your partner could mean that your rules and boundaries aren’t taken quite as seriously by your teen.

There are lots of ways you can raise a respectable teenager who you can be proud of. Following all of the tips above is a great way to start!

  1. I’m going to disagree with you on one point. I don’t think you can be your child’s friend. I think you have to be a parent. They have friends. They need you to set rules and boundaries. True, you can be friendly, but those are two different things. My daughter will be 17 in two months. Be being her parent has been pretty successful so far
