Domestic Abuse has been showed in film and TV for many years but over the last year or so, it has been seen more than ever. But why is it that this has only just happened?
With Women’s Aid about to celebrate their 50th anniversary and people advocating against domestic abuse and violence for many years, why is it that the noise surrounding domestic abuse is only now being heard on a bigger scale?
One Women dies every week as a result of domestic violence. Only 24% of domestic violence is reported to the police and the police recieve a call every 30 seconds. Domestic violence and abuse is an epidemic and we need to stop it. Media portrays domestic violence in their own ways from soaps, to news storys to awareness weeks on programs such as Loose Women. These stories may be real life from real women who have gone through violence and abuse or they could be storylines that are played by actors who have done their own research and asked advice on how to portray it.
Either way, when done right. It can save lives and raise much needed awareness. There needs to be more noise surrounding it. More women need to speak out. The louder the noise, the more awareness and hopefully, lower the stats and one day stop violence against women. It is scary that in 2024, there is still so much violence and hate against women.
I hope that with the media coverage and the conversation being out in the open that the next generations will be against violence. I hope that the next generation of women and girls will not have to shout and scream from the roof tops so they don’t get hurt from their partners and the people close to them. It is the media that can help do this. Showing real life stories, soaps showing domestic violence on mainstream TV, radio shows talking about and newspapers (national and local) coming together to raise awareness.
All of these things together will hopefuly make enough noise to stop violence against women and girls. We need to work together to STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
